I'm feeling a little better today now that I've tweaked my drug cocktail and gotten my diet straight (no, I'm not taking anything that will harm my baby). I do need several things to help get me through my day though, including 1/2 Zofran in the evening (nausea) and some other remedies that aren't "lady like" to discuss, but suffice it to say they are safe and necessary. Jamie told me the other day, "You're doing a lot of gross things now that you're pregnant." Ha. And after we had dinner at my mom's, he said, "Good job on not being gross tonight." It was hard.
I have to really watch my carbohydrates so that I don't feel like a bloated cow. And I've also had to develop a real fondness for lemon candies because they help control the excess saliva that sometimes develops in my mouth. Ewww! Pregnancy is not sexy in my house...at least not yet!
We're really enjoying our Financial Peace University course. This week, we focused on "money and relationships" and got some great ideas on how to teach our child about money. Dave Ramsey, the author of the course, suggests giving kids a commission (not an allowance) for certain chores that they do each week (he says "certain," because they're expected to do more than that simply because they are part of the family). They only get paid if they do these chores, and when they receive their commission, they separate it into three piles: spending, saving and giving. The giving pile is their weekly tithe, and the spending pile can be used toward a special toy or other item they really want. We love this plan and are excited about teaching our child about money (and getting some help around the house ;-).

7 Week Update
We had our first doctor's appointment Tuesday at 7 weeks. The appointment went great, although the midwife and the insurance representative gave us different due dates. In any case, the baby is expected to arrive around September 8.
I loved telling everyone what an easy pregnancy I was having. But when I hit the 6-week mark (almost to the day), I started feeling queasy and this incredible tiredness settled over me. I've never been more tired in my life...I feel like I could sleep for days and still not feel totally rested! My nausea got so bad that I ended up getting a prescription and switching from prenatal vitamins to Flintstones. In any case, I know that symptoms like these mean the baby is thriving so I'm thankful.
Several people have asked if we prefer a girl or a boy. I honestly don't care (Jamie might give you a different answer ;-). There are pluses and minuses to both...boys are cheaper and easier (so I hear) but girl's clothes are so much cuter. I'm just so happy to be pregnant, and my only prayer is for the healthy development of the baby. Even so, I was on babiesrus.com last week browsing for crib bedding, and when I pulled up a girl's pattern I liked, I was shocked to see that it was marked $22.50 (from $170). I decided that if I had a boy, I could either give it away or sell it on ebay for more than I paid, so I bought it (see below).

Our Favorite Gift
Jamie and I got a Christmas present that we've been keeping to ourselves (sort of...wink) for awhile. We're having a baby!!
Being the planner that I am, I had already decided how to tell the family if we got pregnant in December. I would find out Christmas Eve in time to surprise everyone that evening. I was going to change the tag on my sister’s gift to read: To Aunt Sarah, From Jamie and Jennifer. I hoped she would read it aloud. But the test came back negative, and so did the next one. It was no big deal…of course I was a little disappointed, but I was certain God would use this to teach a little control freak like me a lesson. Besides, it was probably too early for a test. I also didn’t feel different enough to actually be pregnant…whatever that means.
On Sunday I decided to test again. Weird things were starting to happen to my body…normal cycle stuff, just more intense. This time I got a very faint pink line. I didn’t believe it and didn’t tell Jamie I’d tested. I tested again Monday…line was a little darker, but I still wasn’t convinced. The test on Tuesday, December 30 (yes, this was the 5th test, and I got them all at the Dollar Tree!), convinced me enough so that I told Jamie we were going to be parents! I still couldn’t believe it though, so I called my doctor and requested a blood test. The nurse basically told me it wasn't necessary, and I basically told her to zip it and take my blood anyway. We got confirmation December 31.
We’re beyond excited! I've wanted to be a mom since I was a little girl playing with my dolls. The baby is (appropriately) due on Labor Day, September 7. Please keep us and our little one in your prayers. We just can't believe how good God has been to us! My office mate and good friend, Jennifer J., always says, "God will teach you those lessons you need to learn, but He doesn't always do it the way you think He will." We’ll be sharing more…

Year in Review
Another friend posted a "year in review" on her blog, and I thought it was a great way to remember all that happened in our lives in 2008. Granted, 2008 wasn't as "exciting" as 2007 with a wedding and a new house, but it was a great year!
Winter - We spent a long weekend in Myrtle Beach with the Shoafs. While on this trip, they introduced us to a little show called "The Office." For the next month, we didn't leave the house much so we could catch up on all the DVDs.
We continued our Newlywed's Bible study and enjoyed building relationships with other couples at our same stage in life.
Spring - We had a meeting with our financial planner and decided to invest some money for retirement into the stock market. But in typical Orr fashion, we procrastinated all the way until the market crashed. See, procrastination can pay off!
Summer - We got our first pool...an 8 foot wide blow-up thingie from Target. I never could quite figure out the chemicals, but we lived to tell about it. I also learned to sew and had a great time making baby gifts for friends, curtains for our house, blankets, etc.
We celebrated our first anniversary in Charleston and had a wonderful time. But while on that trip, we learned that our friend, Erica's, husband passed away in a motorcycle accident. Four days later, Jamie's best friend Jason also passed away. August was a hard month.
Fall - ECU had a good year in football, and we enjoyed going to the games. We went to the State Fair (bad idea) and continued scoring races (5Ks mostly) on the weekends. We also volunteered at our church's Hallelujah Fest (Halloween alternative), in the balloon dart booth. Both of us almost died on separate occasions from flying darts. Next year, we'll probably pass out candy at home.
Holiday Season - We had a great time in Baltimore visiting Jamie's dad and step mom. Once again, we hosted Thanksgiving at our house. It was a rousing success. Christmas came quickly, and we really enjoyed our parties and spending time with our families.
We (well, Jennifer) lost some interest in "The Office," and our new TV addiction became "House." The race scoring business grew rapidly, and we went into a partnership with two other people to purchase a chip system.
We started talking more seriously about kids. To be continued in 2009...
